The configuration results in your hips being positioned about 60-70 degrees in relation to the trunk as oppose to the 90 degree angle achieved when setting on a standard chair. By dropping the thighs your pelvis tilts more anteriorly (forwards & down) which helps increase the natural backwards curve (lumbar curve) in the lower part of your spine resulting in a more upright sitting position.
