Chairs play a crucial role in the work lives of millions of people in the UK. Ergonomists and engineers have taken significant steps forward in the development of ergonomic chairs in recent years. In line with these developments, there has also been a big increase in research investigating how we can better match ergonomic chairs to the needs of different office workers. One of the aims of the following article was to compare different office chairs whilst workers completed different work tasks.

Low back pain and posture

What is the background to the article?

Back pain has been associated with long periods of sitting in a poor posture. However, not all people who sit with a bad posture get low back pain. It is possible therefore, that subtle differences in posture may be putting some people more at risk than others. In order to better understand how small changes in posture influence low back pain, the following study compared postural responses in adults with and without back pain as they sat on a chair.

Can ergonomic interventions reduce back pain?

What is the background to the study?

There is growing evidence to suggest that people who work at display screens (ie people who use a computer) have an increased susceptibility to musculoskeletal injuries such as back pain. Whilst companies are eager to reduce musculoskeletal injuries in the workplace, there is still a lack of research investigating the effects of office ergonomic interventions on workers health. The following study evaluated the effects of an ergonomic intervention on posture and back pain in the workplace.

As the number of office jobs increase there has been a rapid growth in the number of people who have to sit at work. Some researchers have suggested that sitting comfort is very important for maintaining staff wellbeing and maximising productivity. Saddle chairs and sitting pressure: Well done Salli Saddle Chairs!

What is the background to the study?

Previously, there has been some research to suggest that sitting on certain types of chair can increase pressure on the thighs and genital area which may affect circulation to the tissues in the local area. In the long term, compromised blood flow to the genital area may contribute to medical problems such as erectile dysfunction. The aim of the following study was to investigate pressure levels (at the thighs, genitals and buttocks) experienced when healthy adults sat on 8 different types of saddle chair.

Back pain in Vets

Recent research has highlighted evidence to suggest that back pain is a very widespread problem faced by Vets. Indeed, in a study of 867 vets over 90% were reported to have some form of musculosketal pain. Out of these Vets, nearly 70% reported that the pain affected their daily work whilst nearly 20% had needed to take some time off due to pain.

Corrigo chairs: a new range of ergonomic chairs

We are pleased to tell you about another new range of back chairs called Corrigo Chairs. The Corrigo range was the brain child of an ergonomist who then developed the concept into a fully working product with the help of physiotherapists and orthopaedic clinicians.
