About Drugs
Corticosteroids

Why are corticosteroids used?
Corticosteroid medicines are similar to corticosteroid hormones that are naturally produced in the body by the adrenal glands. Corticosteroids are most commonly given for short periods of time in the treatment of asthma. However, they have also been increasingly used to reduce pain and inflammation in a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

How do corticosteroids work?
The predominant effect of corticosteroids is to temporarily interfere with the function of several genes (segments of your genetic material) that produce inflammatory proteins such cytokines, chemokines and adhesion molecules. By blocking these inflammatory substances corticosteroids dampen the inflammatory response.

What are the side effects of corticosteroids?
It is important to remember that side effects will depend on the type of corticosteroid that you are taking. Short term use of corticosteroids is thought to have few side effects. A minority of people have reported mood swings and change in appetite which ceases when medication has been stopped. Long term use of corticosteroids has been associated with more serious side effects such as bone thinning (osteoporosis), diabetes and weight gain. Every drug has possible side effects, so it is important to talk with your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking a new medication.
