About Drugs
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS)

Why are NSAIDs used?
Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been used successfully to treat mild to moderate pain and inflammation related to most conditions.

How do NSAIDs work?
If tissues in the body get damaged for any reason an inflammatory response can occur. The inflammatory response involves a series of chemical responses which ultimately lead to pain and swelling in the damaged area. One of the substances thought to mediate the inflammatory response is prostaglandin. NSAIDs are thought to reduce the inflammatory response by interfering with the production of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzymes, which are important in the production of prostaglandins.

What are the side effects of NSAIDs?
It is important to remember that side effects will depend on the type of NSAID you are taking. In addition, you should know that some NSAIDs take 1-2 weeks before the full effects can be felt, whilst other NSAIDs work within a few hours. The most common side effects of NSAIDs include:

• an upset stomach
• nausea
• vomiting
• heartburn
• headache
• diarrhoea
• constipation
• drowsiness

A minority of people develop stomach ulcers with long term NSAID use and so it is important to discuss your choice of drugs with your doctor or pharmacist before taking a new medication.
